The cabinet has decided to complete the trial proceedings of the rape case within 180 days.
Cabinet Secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam confirmed the information on Monday after a meeting at the secretariat.
The cabinet approved a draft of the proposed amendment to the ‘Prevention of Women and Children Repression Act – 2000’ ensuring the capital punishment (death sentence) for rapists, he said.
The cabinet secretary said that the president would issue an ordinance over the approved draft as there was no session of parliament at the moment. Later, it will be turned into law.
