Bangladesh is a small country with area of 1, 47,570 square kilometers. In the beginning, the name of this country was not Bangladesh. Its name was East Pakistan.

During British colonial rule, it was called East Bengal. In 1947, the province of Bengal was divided into India and Pakistan. At that time, Pakistani ruler changes the name of East Bengal and they call East Pakistan. However, from that time people in East Bengal started arguing.

Since then, Bangla was recognized as the mother tongue of East Pakistan after the 1952 language movement. Bengali nationalism unites for the first time.

In Karachi, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, a young member of the Pakistan People’s Assembly opposed the name “East Pakistan”. He said, “East Bengal has a history and tradition, if East Pakistan is to be named, the public opinion of the people of Bengal will have to be verified. That’s why a referendum has to be taken. ”

For the first time the name of “Bangladesh” is used in the anti-Ayub movement’s slogan “Heroic Bengali Take up arms, Make Bangladesh independent “.

On December 5, 1969 the first anniversary of the death of Hossain Shahid Suhrawardy, Bangabandhu declared, “Bangladesh will be the name of our independent country”.

The first constitution was drafted on November 4, 1972. In that Constitution, the name “Bangladesh” is constitutionally added.
